  At the Gate to Paradise
Berg im Drautal is one of the oldest summer holiday locations in Upper Carinthia. This little community on a sunny terrace in the Upper Drau Valley has been insistently developing its tourist traditions since 1871, with the building of the southern railway line. But we have always placed a large value on meeting others. The word “Carinthia” comes from the Illyrian “Carantanien” and means “The Land of Friends.”

The peoples of the north and south met at the Drau river, and this is where the reserved manner of the Alpine inhabitants mixed with the warm-heartedness of the Slavs and the talkativeness of the Romans. The history of the village can be told from the 10th century onward, through churches, chapels and written sources.

They say the Carinthians are prone towards idleness and a certain melancholy. This is certainly a good character trait for making friends. The openness of Carinthia’s people has made it into a holiday-land. Yearly, over 20,000 guests visit Berg im Drautal alone, for hiking, golfing, skiing or simply relaxing. Many also come again, because they love people and nature.

Magnificent Gorges, Unforgettable Mountains
In the summer, Berg im Drautal (670m above sea level) offers you magnificent hikes through gorges (Ochsenschlucht, Gaislochklamm), up mountains (Knoten, Hochtristen, Reißkofel, Spitzkofel up to 2,300m), Alpine club huts (Comptonhütte, Feldnerhütte, etc) and mountain lakes (Einsee, Zweisee, etc.).

There are countless art monuments, churches, castles and antique excavations for bicycle riders, mountain bikers, horse-lovers or hobby historians, the thermal conditions for hang-gliders are fantastic, and the waterways are in pristine condition, ready for water sports enthusiasts.

In the winter there are more than 200 Km of cross country ski tracks from the South-Tirol border to Villach, the Emberger Alm (1700 to 2200 m), and the ice sheet on the Weißensee (900 m above sea level, 14 Km away).

Those who like touring with their cars, should check out the nearby shopping-cities Lienz in East Tirol or Spittal at the Drau (about 30 km away), Heiligenblut and the Großglockner street (60 km) or the Carinthian lakes on a day trip. Countless skiing areas are accessible within 30 to 60 minutes – a change from many days and hours.
